The Movie:
Frank Capra’s classic film cast Jimmy Stewart in the role of George Bailey, a man, whom on Christmas eve is about to commit suicide when an angel is sent down to save him and also earn his own wings. George Bailey is given the gift of seeing what life would be like if he had not been born and learns how every person touches so many other lives.
The Village of Westdale..
In 1911 J. J. McKittrick began to promote a 100 acre plot, “Hamilton Gardens” as an extension to the City of Hamilton. That 100 acres grew to 800 and in January 1914 Hamilton annexed the survey “‘Hamilton Gardens’ would soon become ‘Westdale’ when the Hamilton Spectator ran a contest to name the addition to the city.
The new urban area got it’s major boost when McMaster University was persuaded to relocate from Toronto to Hamilton. With this renewed influx New York landscape architect Robert Anderson Hope was hired to design the Westdale street plan and in it he included a central shopping district. In the heart of this was built the Westdale theatre ca. 1935. The 495-seat movie house has been renovated several times over the years and is still in operation today showing first run films.
The Chedoke ravine and the McKittrick bridge have helped to preserve Westdale from assimilation by preventing the metropolitan grid construction, keeping intact the unique street layout originally designed.
Today Westdale is a diverse, thriving community, with the McMaster University and Medical Centre at it’s core and while being a vital part of Hamilton, it has retained it’s distinct character and charm.
