Historic House and Garden, Ca 1850
Located behind Hamilton’s City Hall, at 41 Jackson St. West, and amidst beautiful gardens, sits Whitehern. Formerly the home of three generations of McQuestons, the property was bequeathed to the city and is now a National Historic site.
One of five museums in the city, Whitehern is open to the public and offers a glimpse into the past. A unique aspect of Whitehern is that the entire contents of the home, including the art, toys, furniture and books are original and once used by the family. Even the wallpaper in the drawing room is dated to 1850.
The McQueston family contributed greatly to this area by helping to develop the Royal Botanical Gardens, the QEW, McMaster University, Rainbow Bridge and Niagara Parks.
Today Whitehern remains a poignant reminder of the Victoria and Edwardian eras.
